Claro: In-Home Testing—At Your Service
Claro is an at-home viral testing kit, initially intended to detect influenza. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, this innovative company switched gears to leverage their resources and technology to begin developing a kit that detects the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Enlisted began working with this stealth Bay Area company on packaging design for the influenza testing kit and is proud to be a part of the broader solution.

CHALLENGE
Comfort + confidence—at home
The need for at-home testing is here and now. But that doesn’t mean a medical kit should be sterile, cold, and confusing. We were tasked with creating an at-home testing experience that is both inviting and comforting, yet instills the confidence that you can do this on your own and trust the results.
For at-home testing to become a widely-accepted practice, people need confidence in the process above all else. With this test kit, information is clearly provided at every step, using language and visuals that are easy to understand, building confidence and trust in the results. That trust builds credibility with the brand—which is an important part of this project, considering this company has been working in stealth mode without brand equity.
APPROACH
Form that’s functional
Enlisted began by looking at the competitive landscape, evaluating every at-home testing kit on the market. The need to find the balance of clinical-yet-approachable was critical in determining the mood and messaging in the brand visual. We needed a structure that was as efficient as it was comforting.
The finished package is such that the box itself becomes integral to the testing process, including cutouts to hold the swab sample vial and test swab. The entire kit is functional and guided, with the step-by-step instructions printed on the inside cover of the box and the test result options revealed under the test cartridge. With the packaging as part of the solution, the kit is compact and concise, further building confidence for the user.
RESULTS
Taking one for the team
With prototypes and imagery shared with investors, Series B funding was granted in August 2019 and the company was in position to finalize production and take the influenza test kit to market in 2020. We are proud of their decision to pivot and focus on the immediate need for the COVID-19 test kit, and we’re delighted to be a partner.
