Loctek’s proprietary riser mechanism was brilliantly engineered but visually distracting. The default design with most desktop risers results in a bulky, imposing mechanism, and often, a messy display of cords.

Loctek knew that success in-market required an investment in design. They asked us to develop a ‘silicon valley’ desktop riser that people would be proud to incorporate into their workflow. 

To make something Bay Area crush-worthy we talked to the target. In dozens of contextual interviews, we connected with desk workers in the 415, 510, 408 and 650. Meeting busy professionals at their desks we learned that most of them favor parts of the office that feature natural materials and that are cozy and convey warmth. People also shared that removing visual clutter in their workspace is critical to their sense of wellness.

To hide the bulk of the mechanism, we reoriented it and created a tiered platform design that shielded much of the mechanics from view. A Qi charger and phone stand with subtle backlit indicator was designed to ensure a visually appealing and quiet landing spot. Natural materials at points of human contact were incorporated. Neutral and warm color finishes were explored. We used a channel of magnets and an internal gasket to enable clean and clutter-free organizing accessories and seamless cord management.

Beyond the benefit of stand-up desk functionality, the new design enhances the overall work space and the users well being. The design language developed is currently being extended to a portfolio of office furniture and desk accessories.
