Control4 System: Elevating Product Design Language for a Smarter Home
Enlisted’s industrial design team collaborated with Control4, a leading smart home solutions provider. Our collaboration focused on establishing a cohesive Product Design Language (PDL) that would bring together Control4's diverse product offerings, including the Chime Video Doorbell, Halo Remote Controls, and Lighting Control Keypads. Given our specialization in strategic brand-building through product design, we were confident in helping Control4 achieve its vision of a unified design language that would extend across its entire portfolio and future products.

CHALLENGE
Harmonizing Form and Function in Smart Home Design
Our challenge was to balance usability, ergonomic considerations, technological constraints, and manufacturing requirements while creating products that would resonate with high-end customers and seamlessly fit into the luxury home category. Throughout the process, we encountered engineering hurdles, navigated the intricacies of achieving minimalism with uncompromising craftsmanship, and tackled the complexity of designing products that could adapt to various interior and exterior design styles. Together with Control4, we were able to overcome these obstacles and craft thoughtful solutions.
APPROACH
Synergy Through Cohesion
To kickstart the process, we worked closely with Control4 to develop a Signature Product Design Language that would set the tone for all the products in their lineup. For the Halo Remote Controls, we focused on enhancing user experience and aesthetics by retaining beloved features from previous remote controls and adding an ergonomic grip for maximum comfort. Customizing the button layout across two remote control SKUs ensured a consistent user interface, while the simple docking and charging solution, along with the premium aluminum unibody construction, added an element of elegance.
For the Keypads, our goal was to design the products with a sophisticated design that blends into any home environment. We achieved this by implementing a flat shape and an improved backlit icon for enhanced visibility and ease of use. Other designed features ensured a tight fit on walls, seamlessly integrating into architecture. For the Chime Video Doorbell, we considered first impressions and inspiration from architecture, resulting in a seamless design for home exteriors. The use of premium metal and backlighting for the doorbell touch-point added a touch of luxury.
RESULTS
Smarter Home Automation Design
Together, we successfully created a cohesive Product Design Language that set a new standard for their smart home products. Control4's Chime Video Doorbell, Touch and Tactile Remote Controls, and Lighting Control Keypads now boast a sophisticated and elegant design that perfectly aligns with their brand values and resonates with their target audience. This case study exemplifies the power of strategic design language in creating products that leave a lasting impression in the smart home industry.
